Four internship papers at IWESEP 2019

Four of our fourth-year students presented papers from their summer internships at the 10th International Workshop on Empirical Software Engineering in Practice (IWESEP 2019) in Tokyo on 13 and 14 December 2019.

• Thanadon Bunkerd measured the naturalness of code by 678 contributors in 50 Python projects and found that more collaborative software tends to be less predictable.
• Noppadol Assavakamhaenghan mined the issue tracker of Moodle and found that the mix of team member roles relates to issues being reopened.
• Vara Arammongkolvichai trained a decision tree that filters out false positive clones, which raised the precision of the iClones clone detector from 0.94 to 0.98 on JFreeChart.
• Tattiya Sakulniwat visualized how four Python projects adopted the “with open” idiom and found that developers tend to adopt the idiom over time.

Three of the papers came from internships at the Software Engineering Laboratory of NAIST and one from the University of Bremen in Germany. The four acceptances were announced on 1 November 2019, and the students rehearsed their talks at Café SERU No. 3, “New Trends in Software Engineering”, on 6 December 2019. Tattiya later co-authored Teddy, a tool for Pythonic idioms that won the Best Tool Demo Award at ICSME 2020.
